As the D'Oyly Carte Senior Lecturer in Arts and Health in the GKT school of medical at King's College London, my role is to innovate arts-based approaches to medical education. Performance is central to my approach – this experiential, embodied, affective, relationship-centred, collaborative and multi-mode artform can lead to impactful learning experiences for future doctors. • devise performances for our medical students eg Drama of Dissection

• deliver practical workshops using performance techniques to enhance skills such as person-centred care and OSCE preparation

• expose students to provocative artworks that invite deep thinking, self-reflection and discussion on the big questions medicine provokes

• involve other artists in all of the above (see below for example)

• celebrate the creative and arts-based learning in (bio)medical and healthcare pioneered by my colleagues in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine

• facilitate simulated scenarios, designed to enhance communication skills, alongside my colleagues in the medical school

In doing this, I draw on a decade or so experience of researching medicine through the lens of performance, and of partnerships with medical and healthcare educators through my company chimera.
