I am so proud to have taught and learnt with hundreds of undergraduate and masters' students studying theatre and performance over the past twenty or so years! It's a brave decision to choose to study theatre and performance: our culture is increasingly hostile to the arts and creativity and employment in the theatre industry can be precarious. In teaching this subject, I advocate for its importance, both as an powerful artform in its own right, and as a discipline that offers meaningful 'transferable skills' into other areas of life.
Although I now teach medical students, I'm always delighted to be invited back into theatre, performance and drama departments as a guest lecturer. I can also offer workshops and short courses for emerging and professional theatre and performance artists (previous experience includes sessions for Performing Medicine and Young Vic theatre, and five years of creative writing workshops). I teach both practical performance-making and 'theoretical' study.
My practical teaching includes but is not limited to:
- approaches to devising
- visual and physical theatre
- autobiographical and verbatim performance-making
- writing for performance
- script analysis and dramaturgy
- making performance in relation to medical experience
- performance in healthcare education
Regularly-taught topics of lecture and seminar-based learning include:
-20th and 21st British theatre and performance
-performance-making traditions
-political theatre and theatre for social justice
-theoretical approaches to studying theatre and performance
-performance as a theoretical lens
-contemporary performance in relation to medicine and health
